Sustainable, durable, better and convenient use of natural resources has led human to invent and produce better alternatives of naturally occurring resources.
Chemical science has developed a lot to produce such derivatives. Neoprene or polychloroprene seat cover is an alternative of natural rubber which is synthesized by the polymerization of chloroprene.
It is resistant to moderate level of chemical and acids, ozone, oils, fats, greases and solvents.
It is very resistant to flame having melting point at 270 degree Fahrenheit.
It is resistant to abrasion thus; finds application in sports wear like ankle support and guards.
It is highly resistant to water and sunlight and any type of weather conditions thus; used widely in aquatic applications such as fly fishing waders.
It is moderately resistant to petroleum based fluids.
Rubber like physical property of elasticity but, even more flexible and elastic with more of inertness in chemical property and degradation resistance thus;
got wide application in household accessories and lifestyle application including clothes, laptop sleeves, tablet holders and likewise application.
All the above mentioned properties of neoprene makes it most appropriate for automotive use especially in seat covers which provide durability, resistance from water and petroleum based fluids.
Its elastic property makes it properly fit to the structure, take its shape imparting it neat and clean finish look.
What can attack neoprene?
Neoprene degrades in presence of certain chemicals which are highly corrosive in nature
such as hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, boric acid, hydrogen peroxide, iodine, kerosene, motor oil, nitric acid, palm oil, turpentine, urine and chlorine based chemicals such as household bleach.
As neoprene is prone to commonly occurring chemicals it needs proper cleaning when used as seat covers either in household furniture or in automobile or anywhere else to increase life and clean look.
How to clean neoprene seat covers?
In normal spill of food materials, it only needs simple wiping off of the area with damp cloth free from lint. Neoprene is resistant to any type of stain.
In case of debris and dirt only thing is to be done is to vacuum clean its surface with the help of a vacuum cleaner.
When doing proper traditional cleaning things needed are- bucket of water, wet suit shampoo or laundry detergent or car cleaning shampoo, sponge or lint free cloth to scrub the neoprene surface, fresh water, dry towel blow dryer to dry the wet surface of seat.
Steps to be followed to clean neoprene seat covers–
Take about 2 gallons of warm water in the bucket and add approximately 2 spoonfuls of the cleaning agent mentioned above.
Properly mix the cleaning agent in water and make uniform liquid solution.
Now dip the sponge or cloth into the solution and start wiping the seat on the whole surface area scrubbing on the stained area. Try not to put in lot of solution on the seat cover.
Repeat the same method using plain water instead of solution to rinse the seat cover. Rinse it properly not to leave behind traces of solution. This step may take time and needs repetition of wiping.
After complete rinsing of the seat blow dry the seat or wipe it repetitively with dry towel. First wipe with dry towel then blow dry to remove dampness of seat.
For tough stains upholstery cleaner can be sprayed on the stains and let it dry off then wipe it off like given.
Precaution- Prevent use of any bleaching agent or any corrosive agent that can cause damage to neoprene.
Avoid applying water solution or water on any crack on seat cover.
Proper and regular cleaning of neoprene seat covers can elongate its life and prevent it from degradation and abrasion. Adopt the aforesaid mentioned steps for cleaning the seat cover.
